One Major Quake Expected Worldwide in Late May

Seismologists are preparing for a relatively contained week of major global seismic activity, with one earthquake of magnitude 6.5 or higher expected to be recorded worldwide between May 25 and May 31, 2026.

The United States Geological Survey’s Earthquake Hazards Program will serve as the primary reference for confirming significant events during the period. Any qualifying quake will be assessed based on its recorded magnitude and timing, with final figures subject to routine review and revision.

Earthquakes at or above magnitude 6.5 can cause serious damage if they strike near populated areas, though impacts vary widely depending on depth, location, infrastructure and preparedness. Emergency agencies in seismically active regions are expected to continue standard monitoring and readiness measures throughout the week.
